Windward Oahu: Kailua, Lanikai, Waimanalo and Makapu’u Beach

Two of the most beautiful beaches in the world are located on the east coast of Oahu. Kailua and Lanikai Beach were both rated as top beaches in the world by Steven Leatherman, an expert on sand and oceans. Kailua Beach is two miles of white sand. Lanikai Beach, which is located adjacent to Kailua Beach, has two offshore islands, the Mokes (Mokulua Islands) nearby. Lanikai Beach is a popular spot for sunrise wedding ceremonies as it is one of the best places on the island to watch the sunrise.

Waimanalo is another breathtaking long white sand beach that is surrounded by the magnificent Ko’olau mountains. Makapu’u Beach offers a view of Rabbit Island and has an area with lava rocks. This is a small beach and can be crowded on weekends and when surf’s up.

North Shore: Pounders, Ke Iki, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay

The North Shore of Oahu has lots of beautiful beaches to hold your wedding. However, the North Shore can be very crowded in the winter and when there is high surf. It is also dangerous to be very close to the water during a swell. Ke Iki Beach can be difficult to find, but once you do, you will love it. It is a big beach with large lava rocks, tide-pools and offers an amazing view of the sunset. Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay have several well-known surfing spots and can be crowded on weekends. Pounders, named after it’s powerful shorebreak, is located in Laie and is another great location for a wedding.

Waianae Coast: Makaha and Pokai Beach Parks and Makua Beach

Waianae Coast is the place to be if you want a truly local experience. It is the antithesis of Waikiki. The crime rate is higher in this area, so don’t leave valuables in your car. The Waianae beaches are secluded and the view is amazing.

Final note: Beach weddings on Oahu now require a permit. Your officiant or wedding coordinator can get this permit for you. Chairs or wedding arches are no longer permitted on the beach. If you are expecting more than a few dozen guests for your wedding, it is best to hold the ceremony at an oceanfront private residence or hotel.

Let’s start with the most famous beach in the world, Waikiki Beach. Most visitors will make their entrance to the islands Honolulu on Oahu, which means they should get a chance to get acquainted with this lovely place on earth. Waikiki Beach is situated on the south of the island, bounded by the green slopes of Diamond Head to the east. The view towards Diamond Head has been captured in countless photographs and graces many a postcard. To see it in person is to have the happiness of arriving at this dream destination. If your dream is a beach shared by many people from all over the world, then welcome. If a crowded beach isn’t exactly your idea of a good time, don’t fret. I fall into this camp but I was still taken with the charms of Waikiki Beach. It’s not often you see so many people so close together so relaxed and happy! People seem really glad to be there, and it shows on their faces. The sun shines and sparkles off the waves on the perfect ocean, the trade winds have the palm trees gently dancing around you, and it carries away your own stress as well. If you’re a surfer, the gentle waves will call you even as you sit there contentedly taking it all in. This Hawaii beach may not be “away from it all”, but it certainly is a slice of paradise.

The good news, if Waikiki Beach is not your cup of tea, is that you will find a beach that is. Each of the islands has its own specialties, its own essence and moods. The Big Island, which is still growing as we speak due to constant volcanic activity since the 1983, has the many rugged beaches of black lava that reflect the island’s newness. In the south of the island, you also find black sand beaches where the lava has been ground fine by wave action over the last few centuries. Maui has beaches that consistently rank among the world’s

Find the best beaches, for those who like to rank such things. And Kauai, more remote and with less visitors, has beaches which may be even more astounding in their raw natural beauty. Some beaches are not on any maps and if you find them you can get them all to yourself. Even the beaches which are well known and marked on most maps may be empty at times! For beach lovers, Hawaii has beach enough to spend a lifetime enjoying.

Andrew Kennelly has traveled the world, seen many amazing and beautiful places, and dreams of returning again to those islands known as Hawaii.

Waikiki Beach on the south shore of Oahu is a 1 1/2-mile stretch of white sand. Waikiki Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world and its natural allure is the aquamarine water lapping the palm-fringed shores. Beachgoers can relax on the sand and gaze at the calm ocean waters and the magnificent Diamond Head volcano looming in the distance, or engage in some water sports. The weather here is always warm (temperature never goes above 90 and below 70degress); the skies, cloud-free.

Waikiki Beach is not as big as most people usually think. Plus, half of the waters are marked off for surfers. Still, it is one of the most sought spot by beachgoers from every part of the world. The ocean waters are clear, and waders could open their eyes underwater without getting stung by salt. The surf breaks are long, making them ideal for tandem surfing and long boarding. Up to some distance of the ocean, the waters are shallow and friendly to children and beginners. Some parts of the beach are rocky, though, so waders have to be cautious where to put their feet.

Part of the attractions of Waikiki Beach is its readily accessible amenities— all are just a walk away from the surf and the shore. A string of high-rise hotels, historic hotels, restaurants, shops, and the Kapiolani Park front this much-sought beach destination.

Unique Things About Waikiki

Guests are welcomed by the open-armed statue of the Hawaiian hero and “Father of Modern Surfing” Duke Kahanamoku

Waikiki Beach hosts “Sunset on the Beach,” a free movie event. The beach becomes an outdoor movie theater- here guests can watch free movies on a 30-foot outdoor screen.

Once a month, it hosts “Brunch on the Beach,” too. Island chefs serve delicious foods at bargain prices: Kalakoa Avenue becomes an outdoor café.

It has the Waikiki Aquarium, the third oldest aquarium in the US. This underwater aquarium that served as inspiration for Jules Verne’s submarine in the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

The white sand of Waikiki Beach was imported from Manhattan Beach, California and Molokai when the beach had erosion problems in the early 1900s.

Off Kaluana Avenue beside the Waikiki Police Department, the Wizard Stones are believed to possess the spiritual force (mana) of four Tahitian priests (kahuna).

Waikiki Beach is just one of Oahu’s top attractions.
A Hawaiian visit is not complete without taking a tour of its alluring islands. Each of these islands has its share of beauty and adventure either on land, air or water. When you do your island hopping, Maui should be on top of your list. Maui has more than 81 beaches and offers great adventures like watching humpback whales, dolphins and sea turtles from a boat or submarine. The Maui Ocean Center is a huge tropical reef aquarium that you would surely take pleasure in.

Kauai or the Island of Discovery is the perfect place to dive, surf, waterski, snorkel, windsurf and watch dolphins. Do not miss visiting Napali Coast and the Fern Grotto while riding a kayak or catamaran. What’s more is that Kauai has been called a golfer’s paradise because of the great courses like Kauai Lagoons Golf Club and Princeville Golf Club.

Get captivated with the Grand Canyon of the Pacific as you visit Waimea. View the magnificence by doing a coastal hike, riding a mountain bike, motor bike or all-terrain vehicle. Riding a horse will allow you to see other natural sites like forests, canyons and waterfalls. Why not view Waimea from above by taking a helicopter ride?

At the North Shore of Oahu, you will find the 42-acre Polynesian Cultural Center. It presents recreated villages, many exhibits and activities that you could sink your hands and feet on. Many of them are about the customs of different islands in the Aloha State. Experience an authentic luau and indulge in all-you-can-eat buffets. You can even watch a volcano “erupt.”

Inspect the three volcanoes of Big Island Hawaii and enjoy sunsets, sportfishing and coffee at Kona. The great waves at Kailua are great for activities like parasailing and surfing. To top your vacation, have yourself photographed at the world-famous Waikiki beach.

For any beach buff, a trip to Hawaii is like visiting the paradise of Eden. The greatest attractions can be found in the outdoors.

Make sure that you spend time in several beaches, trek on mountain trails and enjoy all the adventures the islands offer.
